Fake clients, fake jobs, fake internships — and how to spot them before you lose money
Fake freelance clients
A 'client' contacts you on Upwork, Fiverr, or Instagram DMs with a too-good project. They may communicate for days to build trust, then ask for a 'security deposit,' 'software purchase,' or tell you to buy gift cards for tools you'll need.
🚩 Red flags:
- •Client prefers to communicate off-platform (WhatsApp/Telegram)
- •Project budget is unusually high for simple work
- •Asks you to buy tools or send a deposit before work begins
- •Payment comes from a 'third party' (often a stolen credit card)
✅ Rule: Legitimate clients pay YOU — they never ask you to pay anything upfront. If payment comes from a stranger's account or as a cheque, don't spend it until your bank clears it (days to weeks).
"Pay a registration fee to get hired"
A company or recruiter contacts you for a job or internship and asks for a small 'registration fee,' 'background check fee,' or 'training material cost' before you can start.
🚩 Red flags:
- •Any upfront payment to get hired
- •Company you cannot verify on LinkedIn or government MCA registry
- •Offer letter arrives before any real interview
- •Email domain is Gmail/Yahoo/Outlook (not company domain)
✅ Rule: No legitimate employer charges you to work for them. Walk away from any 'opportunity' that requires money to start.
Fake internship offers
Particularly common around college placement season. Fake internship letters are sent, sometimes using real company logos. They ask for 'processing fees,' 'ID verification fees,' or require you to submit Aadhaar/PAN for 'onboarding' (actually identity theft).
🚩 Red flags:
- •Internship offered without a real interview process
- •Documents look real but sender's email doesn't match company domain
- •Ask for Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details before Day 1
- •Stipend is significantly above market rate
✅ Rule: Verify any offer by calling the company's official HR number found on their website. Do not submit sensitive documents until you've confirmed the role is real.
