Do's and Don'ts

Your quick guide to staying safe online โ€” save it, remember it!

Do's

  • Tell a parent, teacher, or trusted adult if someone online makes you feel uncomfortable, confused, or scared
  • Use a strong, private password and keep it secret โ€” even from friends
  • Check with a parent before downloading a new app or game
  • Think before you post: "Would I be okay if my parent saw this?"
  • Log off or block someone if they're being mean or make you uneasy โ€” you're allowed to do this any time
  • Ask a parent before buying anything in a game or app
  • Keep your profile private โ€” only approved friends and family can see it

Don'ts

  • Don't share your full name, school, home address, or phone number with people you only know online
  • Don't share photos or videos that show where you live, your school uniform, or your daily routine
  • Don't accept friend requests from people you don't know in real life
  • Don't agree to meet up in person with someone you only met online
  • Don't share your passwords with anyone โ€” even a friend
  • Don't respond to messages that ask you to "keep this between us" โ€” tell a trusted adult instead
  • Don't click links or download files sent by strangers, even if they look exciting or urgent

Remember!

If something online ever feels wrong, scary, or confusing โ€” tell a trusted adult right away. You will never be in trouble for telling.
