Square Root of a Perfect Square Exam favourite
Find 2-digit square roots from the last digit and a quick check
The Rule
- 1The last digit gives two possible unit digits for the root (1→1/9, 4→2/8, 9→3/7, 6→4/6; 5→5, 0→0).
- 2Drop the last 2 digits; the tens digit t is the largest with t² ≤ what is left.
- 3If what is left ≥ t × (t + 1), pick the larger unit digit; otherwise the smaller.
