Nikhilam Multiplication

Multiply two numbers that are both just under 100 or 1000

The Rule

  1. 1Works best when both numbers are close to (and just below) a power of 10 — like 100 or 1000.
  2. 2Find each number's "deficit": how far below the base it is.
  3. 3Cross-subtract one number's deficit from the other number to get the left part of the answer.
  4. 4Multiply the two deficits together to get the right part of the answer.
  5. 5If the right part has too many digits for the base, carry the extra into the left part.
