The Rule

  1. 1The last digit of the cube fixes the unit digit of the root (2↔8 and 3↔7 swap; the rest stay the same).
  2. 2Drop the last 3 digits of the cube.
  3. 3The tens digit is the largest k with k³ ≤ what is left.
